About the election of a new Mayor in the Ecuador part of the Amazons in 2004. 2% of the Amazons are part of Equador, 10 % part of Peru and the rest part of Brasil. It was an interesting view on how local democracy can work. A central part of the discussion between the two central local groups was their fight for their own identity - and especially their struggle to defend themselves from western influence.
